The first part of the Hertfordshire Track and Field Championships took place in good conditions at Stevenage on Monday. The event features the U13 boys and girls events (apart from 1500m) and just the 1500m race for all other age groups. There was plenty of success for Chiltern Harriers athletes in both aspects of the meeting with several medals won.
In the U13 events, two athletes new to Chiltern made their county sprint debuts with great results. Mia Henson ran a PB of 13.85 in the 100m heat and was just off that to run 13.88 and win a silver medal in the final. On the boys side Matthew Patterson was also silver medallist in the 100m with 13.99 in a straight final, and added to that with a great win in the long jump with an impressive leap of 4.67m.
More medals in the U13s came courtesy of Meadow Thomas in the 75m hurdles and Emily Alderson in the 800m. Multi-talented Meadow ran a good race to record 13.99 in the hurdles and win the bronze medal. Emily was in a large field of 18 in the 800m and ran just outside her best with 2.42.22 to win bronze. Meadow also ran the 800 with a time of 2.54.51.
In the 1500m races there were medals galore for the Chiltern runners. Matt Simpson was silver medallist in the U20 men’s race with 4.21.83. In the U17 men’s race there were three Chiltern runners taking part, Jonty Wager-Leigh taking the honours with a gold medal winning run of 4.15.01 (a new PB). In fifth also gaining a PB was Toby Smith with 4.36.74 and Sam Howell was tenth in 4.48.96. Jake Alderson was in the U15 boys race and ran well to be fifth in 4.48.89.
On the girls side Hannah Morton was U17 silver medallist in 4.59.73. There was a Chiltern 1-2 in the U15 girls race with Sophie Morton winning in 4.57.98 and Scarlett Wager-Leigh close behind with 5.01.73. Also having a great run was Charlotte Munn, fourth in a new PB of 5.17.77.
The main Herts Championships day is on May 24th at Watford with 3000m and Pentathlons on July 6th at Hemel Hempstead.
