Under blue skies on a warm summer’s afternoon at Walthamstow, Chiltern Harriers continued their progress in the third fixture in this season’s Youth Development League, Lower Age Group.
With several late drop outs, the team came out fourth on the day and slip one place overall to third (in the league of six) with one match remaining.
In the Under 13 girls age group there were no wins from the Chiltern girls, but several good performances and PBs. Wanessa Idec, Holly Martin and Lauren Armstrong looked after the sprints and there were PBs in the 800m for Emily Alderson and in the 1200m for Beth Welham. In the field events there were good efforts from Olivia Scarles, Izzie Kidd, Ellie Perkin, and Sophie Webb.
The Under 13 boys fared a little better with A string wins for Cameron Reid (800m), Angus Williams (1500m), Harry Brandon (high jump), Matthew Patterson (long jump), and Kristian Everiss (javelin). In the B strings there was a win for Phoenix Everiss (javelin) and second places for Owen Ellis (200m and long jump), Ben Smith (1500m) and Tom Hunter (800m). Alex Aldred was third in B string hurdles. The 4 x 100m team of Tom Hunter, Harry Brandon, Calvin Stevens and Matthew Patterson recorded a season’s best 55.30.
The Under 15 girls featured a third league win for Abi Jones in the A string javelin and Emily Baxter won the B string pole vault. There were good efforts in the middle distance races by Scarlett Wager-Leigh, Sophie Morton, Jess Orr and Orla Fawcett, and across a range of events from Ella Merten-Mancer, Becca Jones, Hannah Dickins, Joanna Lynch, Charlotte Munn and Charlotte Musa. The non-scoring 800m saw season’s bests from Emily Bannister and Sandie Pohlman and good runs from Robyn Watkins and Jemima Taswell-Fryer.
Winning performances in the Under 15 boys A strings came from Siddhant Dey (discus), David Odita (long jump), and Harry Kettle (800m). They were backed up by strong efforts from Huey Chadwick (PBs in both 100m and 200m), Ben Bradshaw, Alex Ahern, Will Brown, George Brown, Ethan Kidd and Theo Kontos.
The final match of the series takes place at Wormwood Scrubs on July 19th. Currently Bedford and County lead with 18 points, Orion Harriers are second on 14, Chiltern third on 12, Thames Valley fourth on 9, Basildon fifth on 6 and Herts Phoenix sixth on 3.
Chiltern Harriers are very likely to maintain third place, a very good result having been promoted up a league from the previous year.
