Chiltern Harrier Cath Holloway has completed the legendary Dragon’s Back Race which follows the mountainous spine of Wales from Conwy Castle in the North to Carreg Cennen Castle in the South.
This incredible 5-day journey is approximately 300 kilometres long with 16,000 metres of ascent across wild, trackless, remote and mountainous terrain.
Runners have to navigate the whole route themselves and carry supplies and kit for the day. Cath has been preparing for this race for 2 years training in the Chilterns, Wales, the Lake District and the French, Italian and Swiss Alps and was one of only 60 competitors to complete the event from a starting field of 130 runners representing 16 countries from 4 continents.
The event is by invitation only and competitors go through a strict vetting process before being invited such are the demands of the race. The event has only taken place twice previously; once in 1992 when 39 competitors finished (most of whom ran in pairs) and again in 2012 when only 28 made it to the finish line, so very few people in the world own one of the coveted pewter dragons.
Cath came 45th overall (8th female) beating a number of professionally sponsored athletes which is an incredible achievement. In the process she raised almost £1000 for the Charity EduHaitian who provide education for vulnerable children
