So far this season we’ve had three matches: at Lee Valley on 16th April, Lee Valley again on 22nd May, and Braintree on 18th June.
In the first match Chiltern had two athletes, Fiona Calder and Sue Bree.
Fiona amassed 12 points with:
18.44s 100m, 41.80s 200m, 95.4s 400m, 2.36m long jump, 5.55m javelin.
Sue scored 13 points, concentrating on the throws, with:
6.06m shot putt, 14.45m discus, 14.42m hammer, 17.10m javelin.
With the help of five Bedford men, our total score for the match was 84 points, making us 5th team out of 6 and giving us 2 league points.
The second match saw a strong turn-out of seven athletes from Chiltern. We even had a team in the women’s 4x100m race who finished 5th in a time of 69.98s. Individual performances were:
15.25s 100m, 5:15.37 1500m, 10:50.83 3000m
33.78s 200m, 71.97s 400m
20.18s 100m, 47.46s 200m, 1:43.13 400m, 1.51m long jump, 5.89m javelin
32.29s 200m, 72.96s 400m, 4.04m long jump
2:32.63 800m, 20:27.44 5000m
6:53.50 1500m, 23:39.17 5000m
Bedford turned up with a strong all-male team of 9 athletes and improved our score to 163 points. We again finished 5th out of 6 teams in the match to pick up 2 league points.
Bedford couldn’t make it to the third match at Braintree and Chiltern had just one athlete to save our blushes, Angela Hughes. Angela scored 11 points with performances of:
18.0s for 100m, 1.10m high jump, 3.06m long jump, 5.63m shot putt, 10.69m javelin
Our two officials, Martyn Cartwright and Doug Smith, gained a point each to bring our match points tally to 13. This left us last in the match but with a valuable single league point.
We currently stand 20th out of 22 teams in Division 3 North, ahead of Mornington Chasers and Luton AC ‘B’, and on the same league points as, but with fewer match points than, Vale of Aylesbury.
Our next two fixtures are both at Watford. On Saturday 9th July we meet teams from Watford, Newham & Essex Beagles, Serpentine, Luton AC ‘B’ and Vale of Aylesbury. On Saturday 20th August we meet Watford again, Orion Harriers, Biggleswade, Barnet & District, and Vale of Aylesbury again.
Martyn Cartwright is managing our team and coordinating with the Bedford team manager. See Martyn’s message about the Southern Athletics League on our website under Club Notices, and perhaps come and join the fun. Maybe in our first season we can beat Vale of Aylesbury!
