Angus Williams concluded his great season as a top-year Under 13 with a superb bronze medal at the National Inter Counties Cross Country Championships in Birmingham. Conditions were great with clear blue skies and warm sunshine and, apart from the odd boggy section, the hilly course ran well.
Angus’s younger sister Orla also had a great run. After making huge progress this season, Orla was the first Bucks scorer in 24th place in the U13 girls race.
Also gaining top-100 places were Will Perkin and Richard Slade who were a Bucks 1-2 in the Under 17 men’s race in 70th and 94th places respectively.
Elsewhere, Kirstie Elliot made her county debut in the senior women’s race, finishing in 218th place, fourth Bucks finisher. Also making a county debut was Under 15 Tommy Davies. A late call-up replacement, Tommy ran well from the back of the pen to be fifth Bucks finisher in 233rd place.
The Under 15 girls race featured a big pile-up near the start and Robyn Watkins came off worst, receiving a nasty fall. Robyn got back up to 180th, fifth Bucks finisher. Soraya Lockwood, after a good debut season, was seventh Bucks finisher in 247th. Sophie Morton was the sole Chiltern athlete running for Herts in the championships, and had a solid run to be 123rd, third Herts scorer in the U15 Girls race.
After recent illness, Rachel Padwick did well to be fourth Bucks scorer in 224th in the Under 17 women’s race.
Several Chiltern athletes had been selected for county teams but, usually due to illness or injury, were unable to take part – Nathan Hackley (Middlesex U13 Boys), Louis Hunt (Herts U13 Boys), Ben Smith (Bucks U15 Boys), Cameron Reid (Bucks U15 Boys), Sam Howell (Herts U17 Men), Jonty Wager Leigh (Herts U20 Men), Millie Hughes (Bucks U13 girls), Orla Fawcett (Bucks U17 Women), Maddy Lacey (Bucks U17 Women), Hannah Thear (Bucks U17 Women).
